This should be one of the most obvious links or buttons but I just can't figure it. In my import from Outlook there are a number of tasks I want to delete, but I can't see how it's possible.

There is a trashcan, but I don't think it is visible by default. Click Customize (toward the upper right), select Trashcan in the list, then save. The trashcan will then show to the far right in the task entries. Click that to delete.
