Why is it so hard to add an Avatar - Cant I just link a picture?

I dont use wordpress, I dont have a website. Is there an easy way to add an Avatar image without needing to write code? I didnt find the gravatar website very user friendly.

Currently Gravatar is the only way, however we plan to change this in a future update. You don't need to write code to use Gravatar. You should be able to create an account and upload an image.
