I don't like the sidebar for inputting multiple tasks, what happened to the task entry field that was on the top of the page? How did I lose that? It seemed like both options were available and now only one is. I can't figure it out. I hate that sidebar so much I almost want to cancel my account.

Not on new layout. So you have three options. Get used to it. Switchback to old layout and live with issues there (they may get sorted some time much later, but it is a legacy and not developed further.) Or find some alternative tool. I am quite of the opposite opinion, but that is only me.

Thanks, I was wondering how it suddenly disappeared. I much prefer the wider input field - it would be nice if both options were available.

I understand this. Just FYI: Even in the right panel you can still use the trick - paste multiple lines of text with CR on each line and these get pasted as several tasks (e.g.:
Alpha Beta Gamma Delta) |

Is it still possible to switch back to the old layout? I can't remember where to do that.

You can switch by going to Modify Default Settings.
