Subtasks gone in cloned task

I cloned a task with 40 subtasks - the new task has zero subs.
Similarly, I cloned the same original task with 40 subs and the subs did appear in the new task. Then I added a few new subs to the cloned task, but the original 40 disappeared and only the new subs stayed.
Very frustrating, this has happened a lot lately requiring significant duplication of work.
