For me, it is just the column width that is making it difficult to use on my iPhone. For my grocery list, I need to be able to check off when it's in my cart (so it can sort that to the bottom and I can see the items I still need at the top), the quantity column (which could be very narrow, but takes up almost half the screen - unhelpful), the item names (so I know what to get, of course), and the section of the store. I use the list for multiple stores, so I group them by section/department. Depending on which store I'm in, I would like to be able to scroll down and see what section of the store I need to view and pick up those items, check them off and move on... Even though the screen is small and you list that as a restraint, I don't need much real estate for the "in cart" check box or quantity (only one digit), so I'd like to use the rest for the item and store section.
