There have been a few threads about this so I wanted to start fresh and show an example of how I use Toodledo and see if I can gather some input on how to better structure my todos.
Right now I am desperately wanting at least one more level of folder or subtask. (oh god please) So my examples - let's say I have a few projects to do around the house (landscaping and working on the truck) What I currently do is create (f)olders: _____(f)Landscaping _____(f)Truck Then I create (p)rojects: _____(f)Landscaping __________(p)Front yard __________(p)Side yard __________(p)Back yard _____(f)Truck __________(p)roofrack __________(p)bumper So far, so good. HOWEVER this is where it breaks down. Toodledo only lets me put (t)asks in the next level where what I need is a (s)ub(t)ask. [or subfolder or subproject - doesn't really matter how you slice it] BareMinimum Needs: Example: _____(f)Landscaping __________(p)Front yard _______________(t)design ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)build ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)install ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 __________(p)Side yard _______________(t)design ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)build ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)install ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 __________(p)Back yard _______________(t)design ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)build ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)install ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _____(f)Truck __________(p)roofrack _______________(t)design ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)build ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)install ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 __________(p)bumper _______________(t)design ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)build ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 _______________(t)install ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 ____________________(s)(t)#1 Ideally - I'd be able to put in another level as a (s)ub(p)roject under the (p)roject level so I could make a nesting of things associated. like for instance the backyard might include the following subprojects (Fence, Hedgerow, pathway, waterfeature). each of those have enough moving parts that it would be nice to group them. So - given all that how would you go about tracking/inputting all of these? would you need SubTasks? I think we need one more sublevel at least. Thoughts? This message was edited Sep 16, 2011. |

Sounds like a job for M$ Project. :) I wholeheartedly disagree! There are many of us who simply use Toodledo for our task lists and break things up in an outline mode. There may not be (at least for me) any heirarchy of subtasks but multiple levels of subtasks needed. I don't need gantt charts, nor project levelling, nor any of the other features that M$ Project provides. We are not necessarily talking about True Large Projects. Just things that need tracking and doing in much of an outliner way. I love this webapp and the list on my phone. just need *at least* one more level of nesting (though I would love 2 or 3 more). |

We have decided to not pursue multiple levels of subtasks for the time being. It adds too much complexity to the UI, which is already pretty complex. We will leave it on our to-do list, and maybe we will revisit the decision in the future. SERIOUSLY??!! Can we have at least a couple more levels? Hell even one more level would do wonders for me. Please? - |

1) Multiple levels of Sub-tasks (at LEAST 1 more level) (need this more than anything else)
2) second the collaboration across user accounts. |

Seeing as how this conversation has been going on since 2009, is there any plans for AT LEAST getting one additional sub-task level.
The majority of questions and concerns that people have could be taken care of if that were implemented. How hard of an effort is this? what would the SWAG be? Could we as a user community sponsor this development specifically to make it worth your while? I'd be willing to do this in a Kickstarter kind of way where we all chip in X amount. I really really really need this feature. and I don't need MS Project, I just need a little bit deeper task nesting. PLease advise. Thank you. |

I love the sub-tasks feature and have upgraded specifically for it.
However be aware that TD only has that one level (or three levels if you count folder, task, subtask) |

Toodledo has stated they are thinking of adding at least one more level (that was back in August of 09).
Where do things stand now? I am in agreement with Anders, while I would love to see the simplicity of a recursive subtask object that inherits behaviors of the parent I would be fine with 1 or 1.5 levels added in. I currently use: Projects: (folder) list of projects: (primary task) tasks for that project (subtask) Would love to have the ability for: Projects: (folder visible in main view) List of Projects (sub folder?) Primary Task (Primary task) Subtask (subtask) implementation task (subsubtask (quick stepped checklist to get subtask done)) Any update Toodledo? |

Cool - thanks Anders.
I re-read my question and it was not very clear - however you answered it anyways. Ill try folders - that may work. Any idea on a timeframe from toodledo as to when the additional subtasks levels will e done? |

Quick question regarding sub-tasks and the number of levels I can nest.
My overall task list will have a combination of tasks/actions: things that are small enough chunks to just get done projects: groupings of tasks that are all related to one another categories: groupings of projects that are all related to each other. Ideally we could have infinite levels of sub-tasks rather than just the one(correct?) however if we had to pick an arbitrary number to limit to I would vote for two additional levels. What is the current status of sub-tasks and feature development on this? |

Thanks for the reply Anders. I am trying to decide which online app to switch over to as well as which iphone app to switch to.
I like having one master list of all tasks but the added ability to see the hierarchy is an excellent thing. I actually like "Outliner" from carbonfin - but they do not truly sync with any of the online todo services. I've narrowed down the online services to Todoist and Toodledo (though the lack of an App for Toodist is currently a dealbreaker) For iPhone apps for Toodledo which one is the best in terms of handling tasks, subtasks, and associated due date views (where a nested item is due today but the project itself is not due yet (the task should show up as due if looking at the date view)) Thanks much! |

Hello - I am thinking of switching from Zenbe lists over to Toodledo and was wondering how the iphone app handles Subtasks.
My main reason for switching from Zenbe is the lack of development and that it is stuck at a flat list. I like to have a list of things to get accomplished (tasks) and some of those tasks will have subtasks (projects). I like having these mixed in the same view but with proper indentation so that you can see the overall relationship. I know Toodledo does not ultimately show things the way I would like (being able to switch between a outline view which shows the proper nesting, or a view by date which shows tasks due by date (btw - anyone know of an app that does do this?)) but I was hoping someone can post screenshots of what the iphone App Does do. this way I can see what having a pro account on toodledo with the app would work like. Thanks! |
