List text fields may be defined as "short" or "long", but what exactly are the limits?

Short text will be displayed on a single line. Long text will be displayed in a popup box with multiple lines of formatted text.
There is not currently a formal limit on the number of characters allowed in each of these fields. Each row can be 4MB in size, so that would be your upper limit (4 million characters). We may impose a lower limit at some point to prevent performance problems with too much text.
