My wife has a free account and i have a pro account. I tried to add her
user id as a collaborator from Safari on the iPhone-not the toodledo iPhone app but
get a message that her userid wasn't found. I know it's there because
she can login.

The userid isn't her email address, which I think you might have been using. It is a secret series of letters and numbers that she can find on her sharing page and then give to you.
