Outlook client makes duplicates

Thanks to you guys for all your hard work on these great products.
I'm running Outlook 2007. When I add a task in Toodledo and do a manual sync with the Outlook Sync app (Version 0.9.8.0), it appears in Outlook. Then, next time I do a manual sync, it makes a duplicate task in Toodledo, then another duplicate in Outlook. I originally thought this might have to do with me using the new "ToDo" app to sync Toodledo my iPhone. But I uninstalled that, then uninstalled and reinstalled the Outlook sync app. Still happens. Any idea what might be happening here? Thanks for your help. |

Hi,
Did you upgrade from a previous version or is did you start with version 0.9.8? This might happen if you ran the client without shutting down and uninstalling an older version - but if that was the case the problem should go away after a reboot. Have you changed any of the synchronization settings from the defaults? If you could create a test task in Outlook and then send a copy of the diagnostics trace for a few successive runs of the manual sync to developer(at)chromadrake.com I might be able to help you further. I did upgrade but I had shut down and uninstalled the old version and restarted. I didn't change any default settings. I just got my setup to do duplicates again, here's the trace. Sorry it's so long and thanks again for your help.

In future could you email the logs, please? The trace files could contain information that you'd rather not publish. Also they are very long and make the thread impossible to read.
That being said, i can an interesting thing from this trace You created a task called 'test task 3' on Toodledo. Toodledo gave it a unique ID of 3224418 . This task then got created on Outlook. Later a second task called 'test task 3' was detected. This had a unique toodledo id of 3224422. Because the task ids are different the sync tool treats this as a new task and again writes it to Outlook. From Outlook's point of view there are now duplicate tasks. Something seems to be changing the id's of your tasks at the web site end and this is confusing the sync app. From my point of view the application is behaving correctly - it treats tasks with different IDs as being different even if they have the same name. Are you running any other external tools or can you think of anything that could be deleting then recreating tasks on the site? If you can't think of anything then we might have to raise this with the Toodledo admins. They might be able to tell us why your tasks are changing IDs. keef |

The only way a task will get a new id number would be if it was rescheduled due to a repeat setting. When it gets rescheduled a new identical task is created with a new ID number. Otherwise, the ID number should not be changing.

I was suspicious of iTunes, but even after I disabled the two COM addins it had enabled in Outlook, and all of its sync options, the problem still exists. No other such tools on my system.
Two little quirks I've noticed: --the duplicates don't get made right away, the "loop" starts only after a few minutes. --it creates a maximum of 2 dups (3 total) in Outlook and 1 dup (2 total) in Toodledo. It's odd that I'm the only one to report having this happen; I can't imagine what could be special about my setup, unless it's something arcane in our Exchange server setup. Thanks again |

You are the first person who has reporting this, but there are only 100 or so users of the sync tool at the moment so you still could be experiencing an arcane bug. It just isn't immediately obvious what the issue is.
Does the issue occur in the other direction? ie if you make the new task in Outlook instead of Toodledo? If you want, you could send me a more detailed trace by enabling the 'Show Traffic' option on the diagnostics panel. It might shed some more light. keef |

I realized this morning when I walked into my office that I have Outlook, Toodledo and the sync app running on two machines simultaneously. (I can't shut down my computer at work since we need to log in remotely.) And I've been working on my laptop at home the last few days.
While I was working at my office computer (with my laptop off), no duplicates. When I came home and turned the laptop on (office computer still on) there were duplicated as soon as I did a sync. |

Yep, that would do it :) I should have asked if you had the client running on more than one machine.
They way I resolve this myself is to filter the contexts that I sync to different machines. At work I only sync Outlook with my Work related contexts on Toodledo. At home I sync with all the other Contexts. This avoids the kind of synchronization loop that has been causing your issue. keef This message was edited Jul 27, 2008. |

If you are experiencing problems it is always worth upgrading to the latest version.
If you can capture some trace logs and mail them to me with some more detail about which tasks were duplicated I might be able to offer more insight. Cheers keef |

I have a laptop and a desktop and I was hoping to use Toodledo to sync my outlook tasks between the two. Is there any way to do that without creating duplicates without filtering the contexts on each machine? I also use the Toodledo iPhone app.

Are the timezones set correctly on both machines and in the account settings page of Toodledo?
